Our Mission | The Challenge of Regional Disparity | Our Theory of Change

RCI believes that building social capital is the key to a sustainable future for the San Joaquin Valley. In practice this means creating new relationships, skills, knowledge, and opportunities for collaborative action across the region. Thus, the linchpin for building the foundation for a healthy and equitable San Joaquin Valley lies in the development of hundreds and thousands of passionate and competent grassroots leaders who can engage their communities in civic participation. In order to achieve this leadership potential, individuals must become knowledgeable and skilled (i.e., literate) in three critical, interrelated areas: 1) economic literacy (skillful participation in the workplace, consumer decision-making, financial investment, and entrepreneurial success), 2) social literacy (effective participation in family, community, and civic life), and 3) environmental literacy (life skills related to health, public safety, and ecological sustainability).
